Why I Became a Financial Planner

By Phil Bollin, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™

Next year will mark the 30-year anniversary of one of the most popular movies from the ’90s, Forrest Gump. Of all the memorable moments in that movie, one phrase seems to be quoted most often: “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.” We can all relate to that expression because life often plays out differently than expected, as new doors open and experiences lead us down different paths.

That’s exactly how I found my way into a career as a financial planner and wealth manager.

First Career Steps

Financial planning is my third career, having previously worked as an engineer and management consultant in various industries for nine years. I graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and worked in the IT field for several years before earning my MBA from the University of Michigan and eventually consulting in the financial services industry. This two-year experience revealed that there were tremendous opportunities to offer financial planning solutions with more transparency and better outcomes for clients. With this realization, I decided to make a career change and earned my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certificate and began a new and more fulfilling chapter in my professional life.

Branching Out

After gaining some experience in the financial industry and witnessing the financial complexities and concerns my clients were dealing with, I realized they often didn’t have the right information to make prudent decisions. I desired to be more in control of the client experience and knew there had to be a better way to provide the kind of transparent and objective financial advice and guidance they sought. So in 2004 I started my firm, marrying the problem-solving capabilities of my engineering background with the best practices of the financial planning industry.

My engineering background provides the disciplined process and problem-solving methodology that defines my firm’s consultative wealth management process. Serving clients in the metropolitan Toledo, OH, area and across the United States, our fee-only services include comprehensive wealth management solutions for engineers, technical professionals, and knowledge workers. I believe in the power of education and love teaching financial principles to the community, which is why I have served on the local Financial Planning Association board along with other advisory boards in the past, and taught CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ courses as an adjunct finance instructor for Bowling Green State University for five years.

Why I Love What I Do

With a background in engineering, I’m a problem-solver by nature. When I saw a problem in the financial industry, I set out to use my experience and skills to make a difference in people’s lives by improving their financial situation. The financial services industry has a reputation for obfuscation and altering the game for the benefit of Wall Street. My mission is to tilt the odds of success in favor of my clients so they can enjoy better financial outcomes.

I am motivated to work hard in my profession because that’s just who I am. I never want to stop learning, growing, and sharing that knowledge with others to improve their lives. I’m passionate about what I do because I love helping people become better stewards of their financial resources. It’s a very fulfilling experience and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help people that I love working with every single day.
